Digit Span Test Scores: What Your Result Means
A digit span score is only useful when you know how it was obtained. In the Cognitive Index free Digit Span Test, the main result is the longest sequence recalled exactly during an attempt. The page also reports correct sequences out of total completed trials and shows the expected answer for each trial.
There is no validated average, age percentile, or IQ conversion for this original visual practice version. That means a result of six digits should be read as “I recalled a six-digit sequence under these conditions,” without adding an unsupported label such as above average or below average.
How the score is calculated
Each attempt starts with two three-digit sequences. If you recall at least one correctly, you receive two four-digit sequences. The same rule continues until you miss both sequences at a length or complete the two ten-digit trials.

The longest successful span is 5 digits. The trial total is 5 correct out of 8. These describe different aspects of the attempt: the longest exact recall and the number of successful trials along the way. Getting some digits right does not earn partial credit. Skipping a sequence counts as an incorrect trial.
What if I reach ten digits?
Ten digits is the maximum length offered here. If you recall a ten-digit sequence, the results page states that you reached the exercise's ceiling. It does not establish that ten is your maximum memory span, because longer sequences were not tested.
At the other end, missing both opening trials means no successful span was demonstrated in that attempt. The page reports no successful trials instead of inventing a two-digit result. You were not tested at two digits.
Why there is no universal good score here
A meaningful comparison needs a reference group tested under the same conditions and an appropriate scoring procedure. This practice tool has no such norm group. Tables from another test cannot supply one, particularly when presentation mode, timing, starting length, or stopping rules differ.
Keep forward and backward digit span separate. The backward mode requires reversing the order; the forward mode preserves it. Also keep visual and spoken tasks separate. A familiar label does not make their results equivalent.
How to compare your own attempts
Write down the date, mode, longest span, correct-trial total, and any obvious interruption. Use the same device and the same recall direction for your next comparison. Avoid repeatedly retaking the test just to keep the highest number: selecting the best attempt gives a different picture from recording every attempt.
New sequences reduce exact-item repetition, but they do not remove familiarity with the task. If you begin grouping digits or rehearsing them differently, record that strategy too. An improved practice result alone does not establish a broader change in everyday memory or intelligence.

Why did a repeated number count as part of the sequence?
Every position matters. If the sequence is 4007, omitting a zero changes the answer. Leading zeros matter too; the response field treats your entry as text to preserve them.
