digit span forward vs backward

Forward digit span asks you to recall numbers in the order presented. Backward digit span asks you to recall the same kind of sequence in reverse order. The material is similar, but the response rule changes. You can try both in the free Digit Span Test, which presents fresh numbers visually and reports a separate result for each attempt.

A worked example of each mode

Suppose the display presents 6 → 0 → 3 → 8 one digit at a time, then goes blank.

  • In forward mode, the correct answer is 6038.
  • In backward mode, the correct answer is 8306.

Backward does not mean sorting numbers from largest to smallest, subtracting them, or reversing the shape of each digit. It means starting with the last item and working back to the first. With 2 → 9 → 2, both directions happen to produce 292. Repeated numbers are allowed in this exercise, so a sequence can occasionally look the same in either direction.

These are original instructional examples, not questions taken from a commercial assessment. The live task generates new sequences instead of drawing from a published clinical item bank.

What changes when you reverse the order?

Forward recall requires keeping track of both the digits and their positions. Backward recall additionally requires returning those positions in reverse. It is useful to describe that extra demand without assuming the two modes isolate completely separate abilities.

A review of forward and backward order recall describes differences across verbal and visuospatial tasks and cautions against treating reversal as a uniform manipulation across every task. For this exercise, the practical takeaway is to keep forward and backward results separate rather than merge them into a single intelligence score.

How to try the two modes fairly

Choose a quiet moment and read the example before starting. Watch each digit until the sequence finishes, then enter your response. Do not write the sequence down or use a screenshot: that changes the activity from recall to copying.

Complete one mode, note its result, and take a short break before trying the other. Record which mode you attempted first. Familiarity with the interface can change your experience on the second attempt, even though the numbers are new.

The test starts at three digits and offers two sequences per length. At least one correct answer advances you to the next length. Two incorrect answers at a length end the attempt. The upper limit is ten digits. Answer entry is untimed, so typing faster does not earn extra points.

Visual presentation is part of the task

Cognitive Index shows digits on screen for 700 milliseconds each, with a 300-millisecond blank between them. An examiner reading numbers aloud provides a different experience. Do not treat a result from this visual task as interchangeable with an auditory score or a commercial assessment's scaled score.

This version requires seeing timed digits. It does not offer an equivalent audio assessment. If you hide the tab during presentation or recall, the interrupted trial is discarded and you can continue at the same length with new numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is backward digit span just forward digit span with a different answer?

The required answer is reversed, which changes how you need to organize your recall. Keep the direction attached to the score when recording results.

Should my forward score always be higher?

This exercise does not impose that expectation or flag the opposite result as abnormal. A small number of trials, unfamiliar instructions, and practice can produce differences between attempts. See the digit span score guide before interpreting a gap.

Is digit span the same as a 2-back test?

No. Digit span presents a sequence and then asks for recall. A 2-back task presents an ongoing stream and asks you to compare the current item with the item two positions earlier. The response rules and reported results differ.

Can I take both modes for free?

Yes. Start the digit span test, choose a mode, and complete an attempt. The results screen lets you restart or switch modes without creating an account.
