IQ Score Percentiles Explained: Where Do You Stand?
You've received your cognitive index score or IQ test results, and along with your numerical score, you see a percentile ranking. But what does 85th percentile actually mean? And how does it differ from your raw score? Understanding percentiles is crucial for accurately interpreting your cognitive assessment results and comparing your performance meaningfully.
What Are Percentiles?
A percentile indicates what percentage of the population scores at or below your score. If you score at the 75th percentile, it means approximately 75% of people score at or below your level. Percentiles provide context—they show where you fall within the distribution of human cognitive ability.
Percentiles are fundamentally different from percentages. If you answer 75% of questions correctly, that's your percentage score. But your percentile rank depends on how everyone else performs, not just on raw accuracy.
How the Bell Curve Explains Percentiles
IQ and cognitive ability follow a bell curve (normal distribution) in the population. The average score is set at 100, with most people scoring between 85-115. The distribution has specific properties: about 68% of people score within one standard deviation of the mean (roughly 85-115), and about 95% score within two standard deviations (roughly 70-130).

This wide middle range represents average cognitive ability. About half the population falls here. It's where most people score, and it's important to remember that average is fine—it represents normal, functional cognitive ability.
75th to 95th Percentile
Scores in this range indicate above-average to high cognitive ability. You're performing better than approximately 75-95% of the population. This range includes many professionals, academics, and successful people across fields.
Above 95th Percentile
Scores above the 95th percentile indicate exceptional cognitive ability. Fewer than 5% of the population scores this high. If you're here, you have cognitive advantages in the domains being tested.
Why Percentiles Matter More Than Raw Scores
Raw scores (your numerical score) are relatively meaningless in isolation. A score of 115 means nothing without context. But knowing you're at the 84th percentile—meaning you outperformed about 84% of test-takers—provides immediately interpretable information about your relative standing.
Important Limitations of Percentiles
- Percentiles don't tell you absolute ability—only relative standing among test-takers
- The same percentile difference at different ranges represents different ability gaps (the difference between 40th and 50th percentile is smaller than between 90th and 95th)
